Not a pleasant thought, but in the confines of our mouth, intestines and vagina lurk bacteria. Our gut flora (candida albicans bacteria) keep us healthy by protecting us from the baddie organisms. Ordinarily we would be safeguarded from the bad organisms, but certain conditions can cause an overgrowth of the bad bacteria which would then manifest itself in a yeast infection. 

A candida infection can take on several different symptoms to include flatulence, bloating, constipation, cystitis and itching as some of the characteristics. Candida or thrush can have a very unpleasant impact on your life, comprising some unclear, obscure health problems.

What Causes Candida?

There can be several reasons why this infection might occur, the main one being a dose of antibiotics that not only kill the bad organisms but unfortunately have the same affect on the good ones.  When the immune system has been compromised by chemotherapy or radiotherapy this can also allow the bad bacteria to take a hold.

Most common tests for yeast infections are by taking a blood or stool sample and because there could be underlying reasons for contracting yeast infections your first port of call should be your doctor. Your doctor will probably prescribe anti-fungal medication.

Diet Changes Can Help...

Altering your diet to eliminate known foods that can cause an overload of yeast has been proven to be beneficial. This is by no means a comprehensive list but start by excluding yeasty foods from your diet, for example, anything sugary, bread, cheese, alcohol, dried fruits, mushrooms. Some of the foods that you can have are eggs, fish, pulses, nuts, meat, oats, brown rice and vegetables.


Anti-Fungal Supplements

Additionally, it could be of help to take particular anti-fungal supplements to assist the digestive system to rehabilitate itself. Adding a probiotic yoghurt which contains  lactobacillus acidophilus bacterium will be an aid to regenerating the stability of your gut.
